WISH Silent Witness March takes place Friday



The public is invited to join public officials and Women in Safe Home on Friday for the Silent Witness March and Initiative program.

At 10:15 a.m., the group will march from the Muskogee County Courthouse to Arrowhead Mall, where a display will be to honor the more than 200 people who died as a result of domestic violence.

The Silent Witness Project is a national initiative to honor individuals who were murdered by current or former intimate partners. Each life-sized red silhouette represents someone who once lived, worked and had friends and family. Each person was someone’s child, neighbor or sibling.

Those honored range in age from 3 months to 77 years.

Speakers will include District Attorney Larry Moore, Special District Judge Robin Adair, District Judge Tom Alford, District Judge Mike Norman, Associate District Judge Norman Thygesen, Sheriff Charles Pearson and Mike Jackson, director of Muskogee County Department of Human Services.

Debra Ellis, a victim and survivor of domestic violence, will share her experiences and discuss how she overcame the cycle of violence that has claimed the lives of others.

A balloon release will take place outside the mall following the ceremony.

In addition, the Sadler Arts Academy second- and third-grade choir will perform.
