A Bartlesville man was killed when his pickup collided with a gasoline tanker truck five miles east of Wagoner on Oklahoma 51 on Wednesday afternoon, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
The truck motor caught fire after impact but the blaze was extinguished by the truck driver and another motorist before the 8,200-gallon load of gasoline caught fire, Trooper Steve Hash said.
The pickup driver, Shannon T. White, 26, was partially ejected from his 1986 Toyota and pinned in the wreckage, Trooper Todd Riggs reported. White was pronouned dead at the scene from massive injuries.
White was driving westbound when his vehicle crossed the center line and the left front of his pickup collided with the left front of the a 2006 Kenworth truck driven by Donald H. Garrett, 56, of Sapulpa, the OHP report stated.
The accident occured about 2:45 p.m. The highway remained closed for several hours while troopers awaited the arrival of a medical examiner and for the wreckage to be cleared.
Riggs’ report stated it was not determined what caused White’s vehicle to cross the roadway. White’s vehicle was equipped with a seatbelt but none was in use, Riggs reported.
Garrett was wearing a seatbelt at the time.
