A free class is offered at 5:30 p.m. today at the Muskogee Women’s Clinic, which will teach parents what to do for their crying baby and how to help them sleep longer.
The class will offer techniques developed by Dr. Harvey Karp, a nationally renowned pediatrician and child development specialist. According to Karp's book and Web site (thehappiestbaby.com), parents who are armed with his techniques are 100 times more successful at calming their baby.
All babies cry to communicate their needs, but most new parents have little experience soothing them. Most parents don't have any formal training on dealing with the stress of a crying baby. On average, a newborn baby will cry approximately a total of 2-2 1/2 hours out of every day for the first several weeks. The class is being presented by Tonya James, child development specialist from the Muskogee County Health Department, Child Guidance Clinic. To enroll, call 687-5477.
