Five injured in collision near Fort Gibson

U-turn cause of accident, police say

Four people were injured shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday near Fort Gibson after the driver of one vehicle made a U-turn in front of an oncoming sport utility vehicle.

Fort Gibson police said the crash happened when a Kia Spectra driven by John Posey, with passengers Reba Crockett, Randall Crockett and Larry Shank, were eastbound on U.S. 62 and attempted to make a U-turn at Georgetown Road to go westbound. When they did, the Kia pulled in front of a westbound Ford Explorer.

The Ford Explorer struck the Kia directly in the middle of the passenger compartment of the silver compact car. That forced the Kia off into the ditch in the highway median.

The Explorer continued on about 75 feet before pulling off the north side of the highway. Both airbags in the Explorer deployed. The driver, Richard Schmigle, 50, of Tulsa was not injured. His 49-year-old wife, Patti Schmigle, complained of chest and leg pain.

Reba Crockett was taken by helicopter to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, but her condition was not available.

John Posey and Larry Shank were taken to Muskogee Regional Medical Center and were listed as stable, but their condition was not provided by the hospital spokeswoman.

Randall Crockett and Patti Schmigle were also taken to MRMC, but were treated and released.
