Q&A with Okies from Muskogee Scott and Leigh Ann Matthews

HOW DID YOU COME TO BE AN OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE?

Both born and raised in Muskogee.



WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FREE TIME?

Go to out-of-the-way antique stores, travel through the countryside, go to chuck wagon competitions and events and enjoy the outdoors.



HOW DO YOU MAKE A LIVING IN MUSKOGEE?

Scott: “I’m a bailiff for five district judges.”

He used to own Bully Good saddle shop in downtown Muskogee.

Leigh Ann: Owns and publishes Southwest Horse Trader of Oklahoma, which is published every other month. It is delivered in Oklahoma and several towns that border Oklahoma. She’s also employed by AdMotions Direct, which has promotional items — anything that can be imprinted. She worked almost 20 years at Acme Engineering.



WHAT WOULD MAKE MUSKOGEE A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE?

“We’d like to see Muskogee preserve its history a little more. Muskogee does a good job, but rather than tear down old buildings and homes, we’d like to see them fixed up.”



IS THERE AN OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE WHO YOU ADMIRE?

Scott: “I’d hate to pick one out — there are so many.”

Leigh Ann: “I can’t pick one, there are too many good people here.”



WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU SINCE YOU HAVE LIVED IN MUSKOGEE?

“We have an awful lot of good memories here. Our wedding — we danced in the pig trough. But the best thing of all was the birth of our children. We’ve been blessed.”



HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP MUSKOGEE IN 25 WORDS OR LESS?

Scott: “Although we’ve seen some of the most beautiful country you’ll ever see — this is it — home.”

Leigh Ann: “It’s been a wonderful place to raise our family, and even though we travel to a lot of other places, it’s always great coming home.”
