Mayor keeps getting calls

With five days to go before he is sworn into office, mayor-elect John Tyler Hammons’ telephone still hasn’t stopped ringing.

The 19-year-old defeated former mayor Hershel McBride in a runoff election Tuesday and has been in the media limelight ever since, with calls from state and national television, radio and newspapers.

He has even had a call about appearing in a reality television show.

Thursday, the calls went international.

“Today, I’ve talked to Russian, French, Canadian and the BBC (British Broadcasting Corp.) media,” Hammons said.

He went to Tulsa Thursday afternoon to tape a segment for CNN, and Jordan Stevens, his campaign manager, talked again with producers for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno again Thursday about Hammons’ appearing on that show.

No date has been set for the Leno appearance, Hammons said.

“I’ve really enjoyed this,” Hammons said. “I’ve talked to so many people. They’ve all been great.”

Hammons will be sworn in at 4 p.m. Tuesday just prior to a meeting of the City Council’s public works and finance committees. The ceremony will be in Council Chambers on the third floor of the Municipal Building.

Hammons’ term is for two years. He replaces Wren Stratton, who chose not to seek re-election to a second term.
