More than 10 community health centers and clinics across the state are offering asthma inhalers free of charge to their uninsured and underserved asthma patients beginning this week.
Due to a federally-mandated ban on chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), all asthma patients who use albuterol inhalers must switch to an environmentally-friendly inhaler by Dec. 31, 2008.
The ASPIRE Campaign will make it easier for low-income patients to make the transition to HFA inhalers sooner. Pharmaceutical company Schering-Plough donated 500,000 Proventil HFA inhalers.
Participating community health centers and clinics from across the state include locations in Hulbert, Tahlequah and Stigler. Uninsured and underserved patients registered at participating health centers and clinics will receive educational materials about the change and may also receive a free environmentally-friendly inhaler.
