Thirty-six Welding I students at Indian Capital Technology Center – Muskogee recently passed assessments and earned National Center for Construction Education and Education Research certifications in the following areas: safety core, oxfuel cutting, plasma cutting, gas metal arc welding and flux core arc welding. The students will soon attempt three more assessments in: gas tungsten arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and aluminum gas metal arc welding.
NCCER is comprised of standardized construction and maintenance curricula and assessments with portable credentials that can be tracked through a national registry by employers and businesses checking the qualifications of possible new hires.
The welding program is one of five ICTC programs that are nationally accredited through NCCER. Other ICTC programs that are NCCER accredited are: carpentry, electricity, construction technology, and heavy equipment.
ICTC Welding I instructor Bruce Jacobs said having a national credential such as NCCER can benefit students in the welding field.
“NCCER is a national certification that is aligned with the AWS (American Welding Society),” Jacobs said. “NCCER ensures students will have the same knowledge base and skill set regardless of where a student takes his or her training, whether it is in Oklahoma or Washington State.”
