A 5-year-old boy died and his father was arrested after a crash early Saturday in Fort Gibson, according to a release from the Fort Gibson Police Department.
The child, whose name has not been released, was taken to EASTAR Health System and then flown to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where he died late Saturday, said Fort Gibson Police Chief Clint Vernon.
The father, Cody Hamilton Welch, 33, of Tulsa, was treated at EASTAR, released and then booked into the Muskogee County/City Detention Facility on complaints of driving under the influence involving serious bodily injury, driving under suspension, possession of marijuana and child endangerment, according to the release.
Vernon said vehicular homicide will be added to the complaints.
The crash happened about 4:10 a.m. Saturday on West Poplar Street, just west of Scott Street. Police said Welch was driving a 2004 Ford F150 pickup west on Poplar, drove left of center and overcorrected. The truck ran off the right side of the road, rolled several times and hit a tree, ejecting the boy.
The release does not say whether Welch or the boy were wearing seat belts or whether airbags deployed.
