FG lay coach arrested in pot, intox case

Olivares’ job status on hold, principal says

— Fort Gibson High School’s principal said the job status of a lay coach is on hold after the coach’s arrest on drug complaints.

Anthony Aaron Olivares, 21, was booked into the Muskogee County/City Detention Center at 1:43 a.m. Saturday, jail records show. Olivares, a lay coach with the high school’s football and wrestling teams, was arrested on complaints of public intoxication, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Fort Gibson High School Principal Gary Sparks said Olivares’ arrest had “just come to light” Tuesday, so no determination had been made about his job status.

“Typically, on a deal like that, if they’re a lay coach, they won’t be around the kids until the charges and everything is sorted out, whereas a school employee is placed on leave,” Sparks said. “But this all came to light today, so it’s still being sorted out. Their contracts are typically not renewed.”

Jail records show Olivares was released from jail at 11:10 a.m. Saturday.

Public intoxication carries a fine of $310. Possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia each carry a fine of $481.50.

Lt. Brandon Combs with the Fort Gibson Police Department said because Olivares was arrested for municipal complaints, no report was written on the arrest.

“We’re not in the habit of making statements on cases we don’t write reports on,” Combs said. “That’s standard procedure. A misdemeanor, where there’s a ticket written, there’s no report.”
