Bacone players overheat

Two college football athletes refuse treatment, one taken to hospital

— Ambulances and police officers were called to Bacone College on Wednesday afternoon after three football players fell ill.

“My understanding is the football team was out running today, and they had some players drop from heat-related illness,” said Robert Duncan III, campus police legal adviser. “They immediately canceled the run and suspended practice for the remainder of the afternoon.”

Duncan said the athletic department is discussing policies regarding exercising in hot weather and contemplating some ideas to help coaches decide when to change practice plans.

The temperature at 4 p.m. Wednesday was 102 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s high temperature is forecast to be 100 degrees, with the heat index as high as 103 degrees. However, Saturday the high is expected to be 79 degrees, the NWS states.

Multiple ambulances were called Wednesday about 4 p.m. as a large crowd gathered around one student near the Shawnee Bypass school entrance.

Two students refused treatment, and one was transported to the hospital, said Rebecca Smith, Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service spokeswoman.

The students’ names and conditions were unavailable.

Campus police and the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department were also on scene until the patient was transported to Muskogee Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Duncan Jr., Bacone College president, was also on hand, talking with emergency personnel.
