Tourney nets cash for team

Shootout at Okay Corral raises $700 for school volleyball team

— Nine teams and close to 100 spectators showed up Saturday to participate in the third annual Shootout at the Okay Corral.

The Shootout was an all-day volleyball tournament to benefits the Okay Lady Mustang volleyball team.

Belinda Clark, coach of the Lady Mustangs, said that the event pays for the summer camps her players participate in.

“We have two camps,” Clark said. “We go to one at the University of Arkansas next weekend, and then there is one in Branson (Mo.) after that. This makes sure our girls have no out-of-pocket expense to go.”

The double-elimination tournament consisted of local teams, family teams, and even teams with members from as far away as Stilwell. The skill levels were as varied as the team names, and the Lady Mustangs had a team participating, headed up by senior Lindsey Allen.

“I’ve been playing for Coach Clark since the seventh grade,” Allen said. “She’s pretty much like a second mom to all of us. This is practice for us, and it helps us get better by sending us to camps.”

Team Landon, who were back-to-back champs coming into the tournament, took first again on Saturday. Second place went to The Wolfpack, and third went to the Lady Mustangs.

Clark wants to make the event an annual event and said she dependslargely on word of mouth to promote the tournament.

“We’ve doubled the amount of teams from last year,” she said. “The community always supports us and has a few teams, and there are also several returning teams this year.”

The Lady Mustangs also pulled their own weight by assisting Clark with the tournament, acting as line judges, helping in the concession stand, and filling in on teams that were missing a player or two as the day went on.

Tyler Moore, who helped officiate the tournament, said he thinks it is a great event.

“This is a really good fundraiser for the girls,” Moore said. “My cousin Alyssa plays for the Lady Mustangs, so I’ve enjoyed helping out.”

The Lady Mustangs are also very optimistic for the upcoming season. They made a state tournament run in 2011, and are looking to do a little better this time around. Lindsey Allen is very confident of their ability.

“As the season goes, we’ll get better,” she said. “I’m predicting that we’re going to state again this year. I think we all are.”
