Q&A with Okie From Muskogee Caity Mathews

HOW DID YOU COME TO BE AN OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE?

“Public school wasn’t really going that great for me. I can’t see everything on the board. I don’t want to be the only one with bigger books. We took a tour of Oklahoma School for the Blind and I came to live here my freshman year. Now everyone has bigger books!”

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FREE TIME?

“I go to the movies and the mall, hang out with friends, socialize. I love “House.” Me and my friends, our whole Monday schedule revolves around that show.”

HOW DO YOU MAKE A LIVING IN MUSKOGEE?

“I’m a student, but I am in a work-study program at school.”

WHAT WOULD MAKE MUSKOGEE A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE?

“More activities to do. All I really know is to go to the mall. There’s not a lot for kids to do around here.”

IS THERE AN OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE WHO YOU ADMIRE?

“There’s a lot, especially from here (Parkview). There’s Miss Lisa, Mrs. Garner, Miss Amy and Miss Jamie. They really support me. I love them.”

WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU SINCE YOU HAVE LIVED IN MUSKOGEE?

“All the people I’ve met. It’s what I’ll remember most.”

HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP MUSKOGEE IN 25 WORDS OR LESS?

“My personal opinion of what Muskogee means to me is ‘Opportunity.’ Muskogee gives me not only an educational opportunity but a social one as well. I have been able to experience a lot since I have been in Muskogee.”
