Warner Public Schools students could start next school year with new floors, roofs, heating and air conditioning, as well as a new bus.
Warner voters passed two bond issues totaling $715,000 Tuesday, both by nearly 80 percent.
Warner Superintendent Monte Madewell said he was surprised at the results.
“It’s great. It’s amazing. I’m tickled to death 80 percent of the people voted for it,” he said. “It shows the kind of respect the community has for our people and our staff.”
• Proposition 1, for $605,000, passed by a margin of 292 to 72. The money will fund replacing the roof and floor tiles at the elementary cafeteria; replacing floor tiles in the upper elementary and high school hallways; replacing heating and air conditioning units; replacing rutted asphalt in the driveway, and construction of two classrooms and a multi-purpose commons area at the middle school.
• Proposition 2, for $110,000, passed by a vote of 291 to 73. It pays for a new school bus and a school van.
Madewell said the board will meet with the bonding company to sell the bonds in early April. This bond issue replaces bonds that are retiring in June, so the bond issue does not result in a tax rate increase, Madewell said.
“Interest rates are low now, so we should get a pretty good deal,” he said.
Once the bonds are sold, the district could start work on the classroom addition and building repairs, he said. The classroom addition would include two 24-by-32 classrooms, plus a commons area that could be converted into two classrooms if needed. There also would be a sheltered courtyard with tables that could be used as an outdoor classroom or commons area.
“We could get most of it done by the start of the next school year,” he said, referring to floor, roof and heating/air conditioning work.
