Area jazz bands take top honors at state

High school jazz bands from Wagoner, Checotah and Oklahoma School for the Blind took top honors at the State Jazz Band contest Tuesday.

Oklahoma School for the Blind received a l rating in class 2A.

The Wagoner Jazz Ensemble and the Checotah High School Jazz Band earned Superior ratings in class 4A.

Wagoner HIgh School Band Director Dave Smith said the band earned 98 out of 100 points for its performance. Smith said the band placed first among the 4A bands. He said the jazz band competition ranks contestants and does not just give a rating.

Fort Gibson Jazz Band received an Excellent rating in 4A. Other bands included Berryhill, Sallisaw, Cushing and Cleveland.
