Fire destroys west side home

Firefighters don’t know what caused a fire that destroyed a home Thursday at about 10:30 a.m.

When the young family arrived home at 1721 Martin Luther King St., to see firefighters at work, they broke into tears.

Muskogee Fire Department Captain Robert Conley said when the fire department arrived, they could see flames in two places.

“There were flames on the northwest corner and impinging flames at the west windows,” he said.

Conley said they responded with two engines with six firefighters, and one rescue squad with two firefighters. They came from the stations at 40th Street and Broadway, and 24th Street and Border Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, they found the single-story ranch-style house engulfed in flames.

“We had a flashover during our firefighting,” he said.

A stiff breeze gathered smoke that was coming out from under the eaves of the house and formed a cloud that temporarily dimmed the sun.

Conley said the homeowner is Lynnwood Wade and the renter was Jennifer Drew. Drew did not have renter’s insurance.

The part of the home where the fire started was undetermined, he said. The dollar loss is unknown.

Conley said Jimmy Moore, City of Muskogee Emergency Management director, is providing temporary lodging to the former resident.
