A Boynton-Moton High School sophomore has helped with fundraising efforts to keep her school open.
Now, Aureanna King said she plans to write oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens and ask for $1 million to save the school and perhaps establish some new athletic programs such as volleyball, baseball and football.
The district is in arrears on its utility bills and faces closure for its financial ailments.
“Our school needs help,” King said. “I don’t want my school to close. I plan to ask him please, please, please because we are winners.”
King, 15, is a member of the Boynton Lady Cardinals team that just took the state Class B championship in basketball.
“We are not just winners in basketball, we’re winners in everything,” she said.
King recently won an essay contest, writing about her favorite singer.
Virgil King, Aureanna’s father, said the school has held several bake sales, rummage sales, a weekend tournament and other activities in hopes of keeping the school’s doors open just for the rest of this year.
He estimated the school needs $200,000 to finish this year.
Aureanna said it bothers her and other students to think their school could close any day because of its financial problems.
It is the only school she’s ever attended.
