Some spices, dip mixes may have salmonella contamination


OKLAHOMA CITY — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall for a variety of food mixes, spices and dips that contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein, which have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

“Ingesting products that may contain salmonella has the potential to cause serious fatal infections in young children, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems,” Scott Schaeffer, assistant managing director of the Oklahoma Poison Control Center, said in a media release. “Symptoms of salmonella poisoning can include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella infection can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe health risks.”

No illnesses have been reported to date, but consumers should take the recommended precautions and contact the manufacturer of the purchased product.
