Warner expands tutoring program

New grant allows help for high school students

— Warner Public Schools will offer after-school tutoring and classes for students in high school as well as elementary school this year.

The district received a $225,000 federal 21st Century Community Learning Center grant to set up its program. Warner was one of nine Oklahoma districts to receive the grant.

“It’s a very competitive grant,” said Charla Jackson, the district’s curriculum coordinator and elementary counselor. “Without it, 250 kids might not be able to get after-school tutoring or activities. Also, here in the southern part of Muskogee County, we don’t have a lot of opportunities for day care after school.”

Warner had offered before- and after-school programs at the elementary school through previous 21st Century grants. The new grant also will fund programs at the high school, doubling the number of students served, Jackson said.

The program could serve 250 to 300 students a day, she said. The district has about 735 students, she said.

“For the high school, we’ll offer club-based programs and activities,” Jackson said, listing photography, cake decorating and computer classes as possibilities.

The program also will offer tutoring, she said. The after-school program could run two and a half to three hours, she said.

The elementary program offers reading enrichment and hands-on activities, Jackson said.

A media release said Oklahoma received 68 grant applications and awarded nine this year, for a total of a little more than $1.8 million in grants, ranging from $50,000 to $300,000.

Superintendent David Vinson said the grants will help fund a lead teacher, who will spend three hours a day with the program, five teachers who will spend an hour a day and five to spend two hours a day with the program.

The 21st Century Learning Center provides learning and enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly those in high-poverty schools. The program is designed to help students meet standards in core subjects such as reading and math, plus offer other enrichment opportunities.
