Nunn wins Hilldale school board open seat

— The man who won a spot on Hilldale Public Schools’ school board said he’ll have some big shoes to fill.

Derek Nunn of Muskogee topped Chris Pantle in Tuesday’s election.

Nunn took 248 votes, or 77.99 percent, Pantle’s 70 votes, or 22.01 percent.

Incumbent Jeff Sanders did not file to run again.

“He has done an absolutely fantastic job, and I’ll have some big shoes to fill after him,” he said. “I feel good. It’s nice to know the majority of the voters chose me to represent them. I want to be an asset to the existing school board.”

Nunn said Hilldale schools are academically great, but there are some challenges he’ll help address after he is sworn in at the next school board meeting.

“I think Hilldale’s enrollment is going to continue to increase, and we have a lack of space now,” Nunn said.

The Hilldale School Board is having a reception at its next board meeting for Sanders, Nunn said.

Nunn, 38, has a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He and his wife Greeva have a daughter, and both work for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Nunn said before the election the district’s biggest issue is “coping with growth in light of all the cuts being made in education.”

“If you don’t have a place to put them, that’s going to be a big issue,” Nunn said.

He intends to be an advocate at both the local and state levels for Hilldale Public Schools, he said.
