Pair headed for kidnapping trial

Father, son accused of holding two women captive in Tahlequah

— A father and son will go to trial on kidnapping charges Jan. 22 in Cherokee County.

The duo, Harley Wayne Scott, 22, of Fort Gibson and Bobby Gene Bechtol, 42, of Tahlequah are accused of holding two women against their will in a Tahlequah home April 9.

On that day, a woman stopped a Tahlequah police officer and told him that her sister was being held against her will in a house nearby, according to the probable cause affidavit in the case.

The officer found the sister in a back bedroom with both men.

Bechtol and Scott allegedly forced both women into the bedroom, demanding money. They allegedly forced the women to take their clothes off to prove they were not carrying any money.

When Scott took one woman outside to search her car for money, she escaped, the affidavit states.

Bechtol allegedly had a knife.

The two men were charged in early May with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of attempted robbery with a weapon.

Scott was convicted in 2008 as a youthful offender of child maiming and child neglect for injuring his infant son.

He received a seven-year deferred sentence.

A violation report was filed April 27 in that case, according to court documents.

Bechtol has convictions of second-degree burglary, knowingly concealing stolen property, felonious possession of a firearm, grand larceny and shooting with intent to injure between 1988 and 1996.

Kidnapping is punishable by imprisonment of up to 20 years on each count.

Attempted robbery with a weapon is punishable at least five years in prison.

Bechtol and Scott remain in the Cherokee County Detention Center. Bechtol is held on $50,000 bond and Scott on $40,000 bond. Both men have pleaded not guilty.
