Dalton Burch of Council Hill has recently returned from the 2009 Rural Electric YouthPower Energy Camp, where he served as a delegate from East Central Electric Cooperative.
Burch, son of Kelly and Dana Rowan, was among 85 eighth graders chosen from across the state to represent their local rural cooperative during four days at Canyon Camp, just east of Hinton.
“In my opinion, the most exciting part of the trip was when we got to climb a pole and riding the bucket truck,” said Burch.
While at the camp, delegates attended sessions on energy, electrical safety and rural electric careers. They elected their own manager and board of directors and operated a Coke & Candy Cooperative. Other special activities of the four-day program included hands-on electrical demonstrations, such as pole-climbing and bucket truck rides from linemen, a 13 low-element ropes course, swimming, an energy battle tournament and a trip to Celebration Station.
The YouthPower Energy Camp is coordinated by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives and East Central Electric Cooperative in Okmulgee.
