A Stilwell woman has been arrested on a complaint of second-degree rape of a former Department of Corrections inmate housed in Adair County Jail.
Shirley Ann Campbell, 69, had been employed as a weekend cook at the jail when the alleged crime took place, said Adair County Sheriff Austin Young.
Campbell quit shortly after a DOC investigator came to the jail to look into another matter at the request of the sheriff and undersheriff, Young said.
The law states that if a penal employee, man or woman, has sex with an inmate, it is rape, said DOC spokesman Jerry Massie.
No formal charges had been filed Wednesday afternoon, as the DOC report has not yet been filed, an employee in the Adair County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.
