OSB names teacher of the year

Allison Garner, Family and Consumer Science teacher has been named Teacher of the Year for the 2009 school year. Garner has taught at the Oklahoma School for the Blind for the past five years. Since teaching at OSB, she has earned her teacher certification in the field of blind and visually impaired.

She stresses self-determination for her students through the self-directed Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The self-directed process allows students the opportunity to run their own IEP meetings with decisions being made by the student on the direction of their educational plan regarding their future.

Garner supervises FCCLA, which includes leadership opportunities for students. She aids the students in civic minded activities that allow them the opportunity to give back to their community. One type of activity is FCCLA's involvement with Oklahoma Blood Institutes annual OSB blood drive. Students are also afforded the opportunity to participate in trips and activities while helping to earn the money to do so through organizing and planning their own fundraisers.

Garner helps each year with graduation and the junior/senior prom.
