Two Webbers Falls residents were taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon after their car backed into the back porch of a house at K and Houston streets.
Muskogee Police Officer Ginny Bemo said Paul Becker, 81, told police he was backing up and his foot slipped from the brake and hit the gas pedal. Monzetta Becker, 72, was a passenger in the car.
Bemo said the accident was called in at about 2:36 p.m. Saturday.
“And it was truly an accident,” she said. “He told me his foot had slipped off the brake.”
Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
The two were taken to Muskogee Community Hospital where their conditions were unavailable Saturday afternoon.
Pat Vannatta, who lives at 802 N. K St., said she heard the crash outside her back door.
“I was right inside at the washer and I thought, ‘Oh my God,’” she said. “I am thankful to God that my kids were not playing in the back yard and injured.”
The car, a 2001 Ford Taurus, crashed into the wooden railing and concrete stoop behind the Vannatta house, crushing a child’s bicycle and damaging a wooden picnic table.
Shirley Carlson, who lives across Houston from the house, said the Beckers had just finished visiting at her house.
“He (Paul Becker) had come up to check on his son and they came by to visit me,” Carlson said. “When I saw him, he was backing out of the driveway real slowly. I went around back. I’m hearing impaired, so I didn’t hear a thing.”
