THE PEOPLE SPEAK – Harsh penalties long overdue

Harsh penalties for animal abuse and neglect cases are long overdue. It is not infrequent, that some of the cases in our area garner national headlines and reflect poorly on our state’s appeal.

People who abuse/neglect animals lack empathy and also pose a risk to other humans. The overall quality of life for many animals in our area, pets as well as livestock, is abysmal. “Life on a chain” is inhumane. “Phoenix” obviously has lived a life of horror until someone with a conscience intervened.

Pet theft, dog fighting and other animal atrocities in the area are far more common than most of our residents want to believe. I commend the staff at the Muskogee Animal Shelter for the great job that they are doing and the commitment they make to improve the quality of life for animals in the city. As well, petitions are being circulated to request that the city council enact spay/neuter laws which greatly improves quality of life for pets and also makes sense financially, to taxpayers.
