THE PEOPLE SPEAK: During holidays, don’t forget animal shelters

During this holiday season, we thank all the people who have contributed during the year to all local animal organizations.

These organizations help with spaying and neutering, animal rescue and sometimes with veterinarian bills. They trap, neuter and return feral cats.

They help to find homes for these animals. Sometimes it is a foster home until a permanent one becomes available.

They operate on donations only. With bad economic times and the holidays, donations are down and many of these organizations are struggling to make ends meet. These organizations have many overhead costs like electric, water, rent, food and vet bills.

They take in strays and unwanted animals found in this area, sometimes fostering them out to caring people until a loving home can be found for them.

Any help is appreciated. No donation is too small and all donations are appreciated. Donations that are needed year round are money, food, litter, cleaning products, paper products, time and foster care. Anything you would need for your pet, they will need many times over.

If you are interested in adopting an animal, many need homes this holiday season. There is a lot more to running a shelter than taking in animals.

Remember, please be responsible pet owners and spay or neuter your pets. The following organizations are local and in need of your help:

Coins 4 Critters, P.O. Box 2466, Muskogee 74402; PAWS, P.O. Box 1525, Muskogee 74402; WAGS (Wagoner Animal Guardian Society), P.O. Box 366, Wagoner 74477.
