I wish to extend my thanks to the mayor and council members who proclaimed November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in Muskogee. In a ceremony at a recent council meeting, Mayor John Tyler Hammons presented the proclamation to Colleen King, who is an advocate with the Oklahoma Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Appreciation was expressed to the mayor and council members for doing their part in raising awareness by joining with other cities in Oklahoma in issuing proclamations.
The goal of the Oklahoma affiliate is to increase awareness, raise funds to support research efforts, and move people to take action against pancreatic cancer, the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
The Oklahoma affiliate is made up of individuals from Broken Arrow, Blanchard, Edmond, Oklahoma City, Shawnee and Tulsa, and is looking to recruit more people to join them in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
This fight is personal to me, since I lost my sister to pancreatic cancer following a three-year battle.
