In regards to the letter to the editor from a lady who found kittens on the highway: I, too, had an experience like this some time back.
I was sickened for the dead kittens and tried to catch the one that was still alive. Seeing the small kittens dead on the highway infuriated me. I thought, too, that someone had purposely dropped them along the highway to end their lives.
Last year, however, I was enlightened by my own experience, when one of my dogs was barking at my vehicle. I opened the hood to discover four very scared kittens sitting on my motor.
If my dog had not been so attentive, I would have started that engine and killed at least one kitten. The others may have held on for a while before falling onto the highway, and I probably would have been the one to run over and kill them. Thank you, Pete, for being so alert.
I choose to believe this is the story behind the kittens you saw. Some unknowing person had these kittens hiding on their motor, and they fell off along the way.
If there is a chance you have kittens around your property, before starting your vehicles, check under the hood or honk the horn before starting the engine to scare them away.
