THE PEOPLE SPEAK – Rename Ag building for Batman-Robin duo

— Dear Checotah readers, it’s time to name the Checotah Agricultural Building after men that deserve it. I’m talking of Mr. Raymond Carey and Mr. Neil Lefores. These men changed many young men’s lives throughout their lives.

Mr. Lefores passed away during my senior year at Checotah doing what he loved to do — working with young men in the development of show animals. He was replaced during the latter part of the year.

Mr. Carey was the other half of the Batman and Robin team as he taught many individuals how to weld and do electrical wiring. I visited with Mr. Carey this week and he has told the Checotah Schools System not to do it because he is not worthy. But Checotah citizens, who is more worthy than Mr. Carey? He continues to this day being a positive influence and providing assistance to all Checotah residents who ask him.

Yes, he called us goofbutts and busted our butts when we misbehaved, but that’s what’s missing in the educational system today. But, I can guarantee you this he loved each and every one of us and did his best to teach us everything — not just welding and electric.

During my senior year at Checotah I snuck out of the Muskogee Livestock Show and took a cousin to Eufaula to fight in the fights at the Eufaula Boxing Tournament. The next morning Mr. Carey had the two individuals and myself bend over the pickup hood and busted our butts. He informed us the punishment was because we skipped out and went to Eufaula. This was on 69 highway and many bypassers noticed this.

As he told us this he noticed I had a tear running down my chin and Mr. Carey stated, “What’s wrong Hogan? I have whipped you before and you didn’t cry. Why did you cry this time?”

I informed Mr. Carey, “We’re skipping out again tonight and going back to Eufaula. My cousin won and has another match tonight.”
