When I first enrolled in high school, I hated science. I hated everything that had to do with the subject. I swore that I would only take the required science classes needed to graduate, and that was it.
That was until I had George Swanson for physical science my freshman year. He sparked an interest in me that pushed me to the mindset I needed to get through college.
I ended up taking more science and math courses than I needed for even college admission. I can still remember some of that topics we discussed in his class. I remember that horrid physics problem we worked on together as a class, and I remember when the light bulb finally came on, and it made perfect sense to me. Rarely do I remember him lecturing.
In my opinion, he is deserving in receiving the Teacher of the Year for 2008. He is one that is few and far between, one that truely cares for his students, and their success in years past high school. I'm happy to say that he's taught me many unforgettable things, and for that I am truely thankful.
Good luck in retirement, Mr. Swanson. I hope my son finds a teacher as inspiring to him as you were to me.
