THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Roland memorial honors veterans

Memorial Day has come and gone again and we are still trying to honor all of our great veterans. There is a great veteran’s memorial in Roland. They have 6-foot granite stones with names of veterans, past or present, dead or alive, from anywhere in the good old U.S.A.

It can be from the Revolutionary War through today. It can also be from Reserves and National Guard. If they were killed in the war, like my dad, they will have a star by their name.

Each stone has 240 names. They put up stone No. 13 after Memorial Day, and are building stone No. 14 now. It should be up before Veterans Day. That is a total of 3,360 names, and we already have 30 more names for stone No. 15. There is also a tank, a helicopter, and a cannon. It really is a beautiful memorial.

It only costs $15 per name, a small price to pay for our freedom. We also take donations for veterans in nursing homes who can’t afford to add their name.

If you know a veteran, please consider adding their name to the memorial. If you can’t go see it, give me a call and I will send you pictures.

If you would like to add a name or make a donation, please call me at (479) 646-9731 or call Warren Lockwood at 427-6725. If I am not home, leave a message and I will return your call.

God bless our veterans, and the papers who print this!
