Whoa! Stop! Hold everything! Pick a subject or topic. Chances are just about every topic of interest or discussion has been expressed in a letter to the editor, including the Phoenix. This writer chooses guns, a little history if you will.
I was part of a branch (Army) of military that required rifle qualification in order to be part of an infantry company platoon. I scored Marksman and Sharpshooter, respectively. But, before that happened, I took an oath to “Protect and defend the Constitution.”
After basic and second eight-weeks training I received orders to go to another country, South Korea, for 13 months. There I was issued a Carbine and a Browning Automatic Rifle at different times, along with the M1 for field exercises and guard duty, etc. I knew in case of need or attack that I would be under orders to shoot and kill the enemy. Fortunately that day never came. But if it had I was ready to fight for my home, family, neighbors, friends, and country.
Now, gun manufacturers almost have a free ticket to make any kind they want because they know some people will buy them. I understand some folks hunt for food; others like to shoot at paper targets and clay pigeons competitively. Guns are even a part of the Olympics. Automatic assault weapons with multi-bullet magazines/clips would tear up a game animal or a paper target. So who needs them? What good is a game animal riddled with bullets or a shredded paper target? I have even heard some people say in defense of owning guns that “look at all the people killed by automobiles or all the babies killed by abortion.” I rest my case. The debate goes on and on.
