THE PEOPLE SPEAK — ‘Well regulated militia’ seems to be forgotten

— What is a “well regulated militia” as described in the Second Amendment and who is responsible for determining that they meet that description?

We hear a lot of discussion about the right to keep and bear arms as provided for in the Second Amendment, but I wonder why there is no mention of the responsibility that the constitution (Article I. Section 8) places on the Congress “to provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the appointment of the officers, and the authority for training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress.”

I have seen or heard nothing that removes that responsibility. Can it be that Congress is afraid to touch that responsibility? Is it possible in prescribing the training of the Militia that they might determine what arms are acceptable?

I know that my knowledge of the constitution is limited so I would welcome more discussion of the meaning and significance of the above portions of the constitution and other obscure but equally important parts of that document. Perhaps our news media should spend more time helping us be aware of the provisions of the constitution instead spending so much time speculating about what different elected officials might do.
