On Tuesday, July 27 2010, we read with disbelief that the Muskogee City Council voted 7-1 in favor of sending the mayor on a three-day trip to a leadership conference in Washington, D.C., that will cost the taxpayers $5,000.
The various city departments were asked to slash their budgets to the bone sacrificing much needed equipment in order to save money for the city.
A hiring freeze is still ongoing and city employees are going two years now without a pay raise. That $5,000 would pay the salary of a maintenence 1 worker for nearly six months.
Not only should every city employee be outraged by this, but every tax-paying citizen of Muskogee should be as well.
If you truly serve this city and the citizens who live here Mr. Mayor, please reconsider whether or not it's necessary for you to take this very expensive trip.
At the very least, please pay for it out of your own pocket.
