The four area teams that punched their tickets to the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association state basketball tournament found out on Sunday when, where and whom they will play in the quarterfinals.
In the Class 5A girls’ bracket, Tahlequah, 17-9 and No. 7 in the final Okrankings.com Class 5A poll, drew Carl Albert, 21-6 and No. 3, and the two will play the final game on the day at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Catoosa High School. The winner gets the survivor between Shawnee and the Tulsa Memorial squad the Lady Tigers beat for the East Area championship, in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Mabee Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Mabee Center.
The Fort Gibson girls, 26-1 and No. 2 in Class 4A, are making their ninth straight appearance in the state tournament but their first as a consolation champion, having lost to Byng on Friday in the 4A Area IV title game. They play No. 5 Weatherford, 25-2 and the Area I champion, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany.
The winner of that matchup gets the winner of Cushing and Harrah in Friday’s semifinals, also at Southern Nazarene, with Saturday’s championship game to be held at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City. The times for the semifinals and final will be released on noon Tuesday because of the 4A Area I consolation game between Heritage Hall and Mount St. Mary being moved to 6:30 tonight due to last week’s winter storm.
Sequoyah’s boys and girls will play their Class 3A quarterfinal games on Thursday at different locations with the boys playing in Yukon while the girls’ action takes place at State Fair Arena. The boys, 19-8 and No. 8 in Class 3A, earned their way to state with a win in the Area I championship game over No. 1 Oklahoma Centennial, the two-time defending champion, and meets No. 5 Sperry (23-4) at 2 p.m. while the girls (20-8) beat Oklahoma Christian on Saturday for the Area I consolation title and will play No. 4 Adair (27-0) at 8:30 p.m.
The winnner of the boys’ matchup gets the winner of No. 2 Okemah and Crooked Oak while the girls’ victor gets the winner of No. 1 Sulphur and Lindsay. The 3A semifinals and championship games will be held at State Fair Arena with the times to be revealed on Tuesday.
