Even with the game tied at 1-1 at halftime, Ernesto Martinez and his Muskogee Roughers felt good.

But it wasn’t to last.

Daniel Barone’s goal with 29:18 left in the game put Tulsa Kelley ahead 2-1 on the way to a 4-1 victory in District 6A-3 boys soccer action at Indian Bowl on Thursday night.

“When it was 1-1, we were OK because the game was tied. After they scored that second goal, we lost our momentum,” Martinez, a junior forward, said. “We had chances to get the momentum, but they played good football.”

Muskogee coach Shawn Riley agreed with Martinez.

“They scored a great goal and we weren’t able to respond,” he said.

Martinez scored with 25:22 left in the first half for the early 1-0 lead. Just 58 seconds later, the Derek Gonzalez tied the game at 1-1 with 24:24 remaining.

The Comets (5-2) scored two more times. Gonzalez scored his second goal with 22:12 in the second half and Ryan Dudley found the nets with 59.3 seconds remaining.

The Roughers fall to 2-2. They had nine shots on goal including seven in the first half.

Muskogee had a chance to score late, but Shay Hoog’s attempt with 45.5 seconds remaining went wide of the net.

“I think we had four or five opportunities to score and didn’t,” Riley said. “The No. 1 thing for us right now is we don’t have everyone healthy. We’ve got two players out sick and two who are injured. Once we get those players back and start playing like we want them to play, we’ll be tough to beat.”

Martinez and the Roughers look to regroup after the spring break.

“We’ll get the momentum back when we return,” he said.

Girls:

Tulsa Kelley 12, MHS 2

Paige Logsdon, a junior forward, scored the Lady Roughers’ goals with 30:22 and 27:30 left in the game. That cut  the Lady Comets’ lead to 9-2.

“Her and Morgan Springborn are the two best forwards in the state,” MHS coach Curt Denton said. “We just have to learn to get the ball to them.  But Bishop Kelley (the defending 6A state champion) intimidated us. They’ve been killing everybody.”

The Lady Roughers slipped to 2-2 with the loss.

For the Lady ‘Comets (4-0), Stephanie Krawczyk and Audra Keeling scored three goals each, while Bailey Haydock and Katie Sprouse had two each and Claire Kelley and Maggie Greenley found the goal once each.
