Sequoyah girls end 3-year drought

SAND SPRINGS – Safe to say, it was a quick – and necessary – recovery for Sequoyah.

After absorbing a pounding at the hands of unbeaten Perkins-Tryon in Friday’s Class 3A Area I championship game, the Lady Indians caught fire early in what became a 64-49 win over Oklahoma Christian for the consolation title Saturday night.

The Lady Indians (20-8) hit six 3-point shots, three by Courtney Jones amon her 11 points as her team built a 25-8 lead late in the opening quarter.

“I give the credit to my teammates for passing me the ball, for driving and kicking the ball back to me,” Jones said.

She hit one all game in the 56-27 loss to Perkins.

“I had to come back strong after last night,” she said.

She did, and the 11th-ranked Lady Indians are back at state for the first time since 2010. They’ll shoot for their first gold ball since 2007, the end of a three-year run at the top.

Sequoyah’s lead stayed in double digits until OCS’s Abby Sanders drained a two-pointer that made it a nine-point game with 6:20 to play. The Lady Saints would get as close as eight points but Audrey Ballou kept them in check with eight fourth-quarter points for the Lady Indians. She finished with 10.

Consistent throughout was Loren Young, who led the scoring with 16 points.

“We were a little complacent last night,” said Sequoyah coach Larry Shade. “We got out of our offense and got out of our game plan and anytime you do that it disrupts everything.”

Shade and his program know all about disruption. He is the fourth head coach this year – as well as the second. He took over after Larry Grigg was dismissed just before the start of the season and then had his tenure split by Ron Cox for five games before Cox resigned.

“I’d like to take credit for this but it’s them,” he said. “They do what they do and they’re good at what they do.”

Madeline Brown led OCS, which ended its season unranked at 19-9, with 15 points.
