KINGSTON — Midway coach Spencer Phipps looked up at the scoreboard and liked what he saw.
“I saw we were up 20 points and I was feeling pretty confident,” he said.
And, one step closer to the school’s first state basketball tournament appearance in 33 years as the Lady Chargers coasted from that point in the second half to beat Bokoshe 48-31 in the Class B Area IV consolation semifinals at Kingston High School.
Hailee Truesdell and Zadie McElhaney led Midway with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Standing in the way of that state berth for the Lady Chargers, ranked 16th in the final regular season Class B coaches poll by Okrankings, is No. 2 Lomega, a 66-52 loser to No. 4 Red Oak. If Midway wins that game, it will advance to the state tournament for the first time since 1980, but it will take a big effort. Midway lost to Lomega in regionals, 71-37.
“If we play hard enough, I think we can go to state,” Truesdell said.
Phipps said his team played “excellent defense” against a perimeter attack.
“Bokoshe had two (on the perimeter) who were pretty good,” he said. “We did a good job of keeping them out of the lane. We made it really tough on them.”
McElhaney agreed.
“One of them was left-handed and we did a good job of pushing her to shoot right-handed,” she said. “The other one was good a 3-point shooter, but I don’t think she shot as well as she has in the past.”
