Prep football playoffs: Those still alive

Hilldale (11-1) has never been three rounds deep in the postseason until now. The Hornets beat Verdigris 36-23 and travel to Blanchard in a 3A quarterfinal Friday. The Lions (10-1) are similar to Stigler in its offensive spread attack, Hornets coach Chad Kirkhart said this weekend. Hilldale beat Stigler in the season opener and forced four interceptions off Panthers QB Cade Shearwood.

Wagoner (11-1) is one step from its third consecutive 4A state championship game. The defending champs beat Weatherford 33-10 and instead of a dream area matchup at Indian Bowl, as rumored, with Fort Gibson, the Bulldogs face the team that beat the Tigers, Anadarko (12-0), at Langston University on Friday. Wagoner forced six Weatherford turnovers and held the Eagles to negative rushing yardage in the second half while Lawrence Evitt rushed for 152 yards and three scores

Vian (12-0) gets its rematch with two-time 2A champion Hennessey (10-2) after being tested — for a half —against Kansas last week before winning 76-26. The Wolverines with 778 points have plowed past Guthrie’s 764 points in 2007 for most points in a season but it looks like, according to records from the National Federation of State High Schools record books that the Wolverines are within range of the most nationally over a 15-game season (Refugio, Texas, 891 in 2011). They would need 37 points in three possible remaining games. The overall most of 903 was set in a 16-game season in 2001 by Albemarle, N.C. The average per game is 75 by Jersey Shore, Pa., in 1922. Vian is averaging 64 per game. But the Wolverines have a task at home Friday and on the other side of the bracket, Frederick, has 748 points.

Stigler (10-2) has reached the third round for the first time since 1965, joining Hilldale in the 3A quarterfinals. The Panthers face Kingfisher (12-0) at Kingfisher on Friday after disposing of Berryhill 42-21.
