Fort Gibson running back Jake Gandara and six other area players were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State East squad released Monday.
Joining Gandara among five offensive picks from the area were Stigler quarterback Cade Shearwood, wide receiver Kerwin Thomas of Wagoner and two offensive linemen, Gore’s Chance Douthit and Vian’s Rob Boyd.
Area players picked on defense were Vian linebacker Rowdy Simon and Wagoner linebacker T.J. Ponds.
Gandara led Fort Gibson in rushing with 2,234 yards on 243 carries and 30 touchdowns while grabbing seven passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. Shearwood had 234 carries for 1,769 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns and completed 118 of 207 passes for 2,018 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Thomas broke his collar bone in week 8 and missed the remainder of the season but still finished with 526 yards on seven catches and rushed for 327 yards. Simon, the 2011 All-Phoenix Small School Defensive Player of the Year, was second on the Wolverines this year with 132 tackles in helping Vian advance to the Class 2A semifinals while Ponds had 94 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, caused three fumbles, recovered one fumble and had 10 sacks and 18 quarterback pressures.
Boyd was a four-year starter for the Wolverines and graded out at 98 percent this season while being named the District 2A-6 Offensive Lineman of the Year. Douthit graded out at 89 percent and recorded 53 knockdowns.
The OCA all-state game will be played Aug. 2 at a site to be determined.
All were also named as all-stars representing their school’s respective classifications: Gandara, Thomas and Ponds in Class 4A, Shearwood in 3A, Simon and Boyd in 2A and Douthit in A. Simon was picked as an all-star at running back.
Joining them were Fort Gibson tight end Ned Adair, Hilldale linebackers Josh Giem and Jamaul Cullom, Sequoyah quarterback Brayden Scott and defensive back Niko Hammer, Stigler wide receiver Colton Shearwood and defensive back Ryan Echelle, Haskell linebacker Britt Williams, Vian quarterback Landon Decker, Warner linebacker Briar Campbell and defensive lineman Luke Moses, Gore linebackers Ben Smith and Colby Clay.
