EARNING THEIR STRIPES: Student is an ‘amazing young woman’

— Carla Horton is an “amazing young woman,” said her mother Cindy.

“She has an amazing heart, an amazing faith and she always sees the good in a person,” Cindy said.

Carla is Fort Gibson High School’s senior class president, president of the Math and Science Club and president of the History Club. She has many interests and hobbies  and she pursues them all avidly.

She plans to attend Northeastern State University to study to become a teacher after graduation.

“I always wanted to help people. I do a lot of tutoring here at the high school and also for younger children,” Carla said. Her goal is to teach upper-level math and she has been accepted into the honors program, she said. Carla will receive full tuition plus room and board.

She holds a 4.4 average grade point average, which includes her advanced placement classes.

“Teachers can make a difference,” Carla said.

Cindy said Carla is the third in line of four daughters in the family, and stays busy organizing community service projects for the senior class, clubs and her church.

Carla also works for the before and after care at school and assists in the 3-year-old class where, “the parents, as well as the children and the teachers love her,” Cindy said.

“She has worked so hard for this her entire life,” Cindy said. “I cannot express how very proud I am of her. There simply isn’t words for it.”

Carla also plays sports for her school team and has won awards for her softball team. She belongs to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and said she is extremely active.

Carla, who enjoys camping, said she wants to do as much traveling as she can after she graduaftes.

“I want to go everywhere,” she said. The high school senior came from Texas with her family during her freshman year.

Carla said credits her success to, “a little bit of everything.”

“My mother pushes me and gives me a lot of support,” she said. Her philosophy on achievement is to “keep my eye on the prize.”

Carla has three sisters, Ashlie, Leah and Emily, and is the daughter of Cindy and Duane Horton.
