Happy Fourth of July. Nothing like getting together with family and friends to celebrate our independence.
As a kid, my family lived on a 10-acre place. Every year we would invite church members, friends or family to our house to shoot fireworks.
There would be plenty of food. Now summer would not summer, without hand cranked ice cream... My mom had a recipe for the best orange ice cream (sherbet).
Nothing like cranking the handle and enjoying the fruits of my labor. Of course we had other flavors, but the orange was the best... Oh, the memories...
We have a winner — Mike Blackman of Fort Gibson was the winner of the 5-year Oklahoma Resident Fishing License. I would like to thank everyone that stopped in to participate. The winning is just beginning.
Fishing below Fort Gibson Dam has been slow. A few anglers have braved the heat and caught sand bass and snagged a few small spoonbills.
There are a couple of flood gates open, plus two sluice gates, to provide fresh water in the basins below the flood gates.
We do not need another fish kill like we've had the past couple of years... Thanks to the Corps of Engineers for efforts in keeping fresh water in the basins for the survival of the stripers and other fish.
Rex Oden and his brother John Oden had a great day of fishing. They had caught several blues and a flathead catfish. The flathead weighed 43-pounds. The blue was 20-pounds. Good job fellas.
I hope everyone has a safe Fourth of July. Make sure to watch the kids as they enjoy the Fourth of July fireworks. Don't need any accidents...
Please know the signs of heat related health problems. Don't wait until it is too late. Take plenty of water and use sunscreen. If you think you have been over exposed to the heat, get medical help as soon as possible.
Till next time, be safe and keep your line tight.
