Pre-registration for 5k, fun run now open

I want to, again, remind everyone of our 16th annual Historic Fort Gibson 5K and One-Mile Fun Run, scheduled for Aug. 25. The run begins at 7:30 a.m. and the starting location is just west of the railroad tracks on West Poplar Street.

The road race is open to all runners of all ages and athletic abilities. The course is certified by USATF Oklahoma and is mostly flat blacktop.

Medals and trophies will be given to overall male and female finishers, and medals will be awarded the top three male and female finishers in each of the age groups.

Water stations will be provided, along with fruit and snacks for all participants. Entry fee is $20, which includes an official T-shirt.

The entry fee is reduced to $15 for groups and clubs of six or more members. You can register by mail, in person, or by sending your email to fortgibson@sbcglobal.net. and an entry form will be sent to you.

You can also register early on the morning of the race with no penalty if you are there early enough to enter before the 7:30 a.m. start time. Registration booths are usually set up by 6 a.m. the morning of the race.

Logistics are handled by Glen's Road Race Service out of Tulsa. For all pre-race registrations, packets will be available before the race on race day.

This past year, we had a record 400-plus runners that took to the course, and we would like to see that number duplicated again this year.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with the registration tables and to help man the water station. If you want to get involved, contact me here at the chamber, (918) 478-4780 or (918) 577-2069. An entry form is attached to this note.

Our Weekly Chamber luncheons have been going very well, being held at Simple Simon's Pizza each Thursday at 11:30 a.m. for the month of July.

This past week found Valerie Ferguson, Rhonda Lee, Mark Young, Justin Young, Kathy Perkins, Tonia Cooper and son Zachary with friend John Arney, Megan Bain and daughter Morgan, and Cheryl Hill and daughter Katie, along with myself.

It was like "bring your child to chamber luncheon day" — we love it. As mentioned, we will remain at Simple Simon's one more Thursday — July 26. For the month of August, we move to Fajita Rita's. Come join us and experience the fun. I also want to remind everyone of our weekly Fort Gibson Farmer's Market being held at our new location at Langston Park, on South Lee Street, just north of the library. The new location has brought some new vendors, and we invite everyone to stop by and check it out. The established hours for the market are 3-7 p.m. every Thursday. There is no vendor or booth fee, and you are invited to sell your fruits, vegetables, plants, food stuffs and other new items. No flea market type merchandise please.
