Teen summer reading program to feature Steampunk

— Spring Break is here. I hope your teens were involved in the photo scavenger hunt this past Tuesday. Judy will have crafts 4 p.m. Thursday for elementary age kids during Spring Break also.

A genre in literature that might interest teens and adults is called Steampunk.

Steampunk is a genre that combines science fiction and the Victorian age or the Industrial Age. While Steampunk is a relatively new term, Steampunk has been around long before it was actually called Steampunk in the 1980s. Jules Vern’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and H. G. Well’s Time Machine are considered Steampunk.

Another series that teens might find interesting is the Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. The two main characters, Alek, a prince without a throne from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Deryn, a girl disguised as a guy from the British Air Service are thrown together aboard the mighty airship Leviathan.

Steampunk is characterized by steam operated machinery and analog computers. People often wear goggles, and fly in airships.

The teen summer reading program will have activities related to Steampunk such as creating hats or jewelry from old broken watches or jewelry pieces. Don’t forget story time at 10 a.m. Thursdays. Enjoy Spring Break and hope to see you at the library soon.
