Downtown Muskogee Inc. has announced the winners of the first “Muskogee in Springtime” Photo Contest.
The competition was open to professional and amateur photographers using any brand of camera or lens. To capture the beauty of Muskogee in springtime, all photos submitted to the contest must have been taken within a 15-mile radius of downtown Muskogee between April 1 and May 30, 2010.
“Muskogee is well known for its beauty in the spring and we wanted this contest to capture that beauty,” said Jonita Mullins, executive director of Downtown Muskogee Inc. “This was an opportunity for area photographers to let their work shine with some beautiful photography. We were looking for photos of Muskogee at its best and we were not disappointed.”
Prize money was awarded for the best photo in an adult category, 18 and older; and youth category, age 12 to 17. Each photographer was limited to six photo submissions to the contest.
In the adult category, first place was awarded to David Jones of Muskogee, second place to Nancy Gassaway of Muskogee, and third place and honorable mention both went to Anita Barnes of Fort Gibson.
In the youth category, first, second and third place were awarded to Savannah Faught, daughter of George and Becky Faught of Muskogee. Honorable mention was awarded to Travis Akehurst, son of Danny and Melinda Akehurst of Haskell.
The photos were judged by the Downtown Muskogee Inc. board of directors, and by Jerry Willis of the Muskogee Phoenix and Wren Stratton of Indian Capital Technology Center. The judges were not given the names of the photographers.
The best photos taken for the contest will be selected for an exhibit and sale with funds going to Downtown Muskogee Inc. Photo credit will be given to the photographer of all photos selected for the exhibit. The photographs will be enlarged and framed, then displayed at downtown businesses.
Downtown Muskogee Inc. manages the award-winning Main Street program for the community. Anyone interested in one of these beautifully framed photos from the contest should contact Downtown Muskogee Inc. at 683-2400 or muskogeemainstreet@gmail.com. Proceeds benefit this non-profit organization and are tax deductible. All the winning photos will be posted at www.downtownmuskogee.org.
