The Muskogee Public Library’s Adult Literacy Department needs tutors to help other adults learn necessary skills in Literacy, ESL, GED, math, and U.S. citizenship.
Quite often people will say, “I would like to tutor, but I don’t feel qualified,” “I have never taught anything to anyone. I’m not sure if I would be able to help,” “I don’t speak a language other than English,” or “I cannot do math,” etc.
If you have a high school diploma or equivalent, are able to read and write proficiently, are willing to commit one hour per week for one year (not including vacations and holidays), are reliable and have patience and a desire to help others, then you qualify to be a tutor.
There is often a fear of having to tutor someone all by yourself, especially if you have never done so before. Tutors are never expected to figure things out on their own. All tutors are required to undergo training, which takes place at Muskogee Public Library with the Adult Literacy Department staff as instructors. After you begin working with a student, the Adult Literacy Coordinator will help as much as needed. An ongoing line of communication between the tutors and the coordinator is necessary and required. Tutors are appreciated and we try to give as much support as needed to each tutor.
Being a tutor is rewarding. You are making a difference by helping another person reach their goals and starting a positive change in their lives.
We offer the following classes and need tutors for all areas: Adult Basic Education (reading, writing, spelling, comprehension); English as a Second Language; GED test preparation; U.S. citizenship test preparation and math (basic to upper level).
If you have questions or would like more information, please call me or visit Muskogee Public Library.
Penny Chastain is the adult literacy coordinator at Muskogee Public Library. You can reach her at (918) 682-6657, Ext. 246.
