Picture yourself sitting by a warm fire enjoying homemade cookies, candy and hot chocolate with family and friends.
The women of St. Joseph Altar Society are doing the baking for you. Come visit their Christmas Bakery from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Hall, 321 N. Virginia St.
Choose from a mouth-watering fudge, delectable candies and scrumptious cookies. Cost is $6 per pound.
The women are busy preparing goodies for you, your family and friends to enjoy this holiday season.
“Take time out of your busy holiday schedule and help us save you time in the kitchen and come visit our bakery,” said Mary Upchurch, president of the Altar Society.
The tradition at her house since her children were young was to make a batch of sugar cookies and have everyone in the family get together to decorate the Christmas treats.
“My children would be creative and decorate their cookies in various colors and designs and earmark them for their culinary enjoyment,” she said. “My children are now grown, but we still try to keep this tradition whenever possible.”
Lucille Ferguson, vice president of the Altar Society and coordinator of this event, is excited about this year’s cookie and candy sale.
“As in past years, we will have a great selection of cookies, fudge and candy,” Ferguson said. “Last year we had over 120 ladies donate their baked goods for this event. The sale was very successful and we raised about $2,400. This year this event is being met with the same level of enthusiasm, so we expect a great selection of baked items.”
The funds are used to purchase clergy vestments, altar cloths, candles, and various other items needed by the church. Local charities, such as the Infant Supply Closet also receive donations from our fundraisers.
“In these economic times, there are many needy families in our community, and what better way to help than to support a fundraiser,” Ferguson said.
This year gift wrapping service is provided by the students of St. Joseph Catholic School. You can drop gifts off at the gift wrapping center and spend time selecting your Christmas goodies.
