Not many people are able to pass down a legacy that lasts 100 years, but it happened in Taft recently when Flipper Chapel African Methodist Episcopal celebrated its anniversary.
On the 100th anniversary, the small church had a packed house with friends, family and visiting churches. They celebrated all the pastors — from the first, the Rev. G. W. Brown, to the current pastor, the Rev. Kevin Clayton, who has been the leader, for seven years.
In 1909, a families of Taft decided they wanted a church and built Flipper Chapel A.M.E. from donations of money, land, material, time and labor, according to a media release.
“And to this day, many of those original families are still represented by grandchildren, and great-grandchildren,” Clayton said.
