TAHLEQUAH — To honor all service men and women, the Cherokee Nation will host a reception for veterans and their families from 4 to 6 p.m. today in conjunction with the 58th Annual Cherokee National Holiday.
The event will be in the reception room on the lower level of the Place Where They Play, located on the Sequoyah Schools campus.
Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith, Deputy Principal Chief Joe Grayson Jr. and other tribal and local officials will be on hand to welcome attendees. Veterans from all eras and military branches are encouraged to attend and enjoy fellowship and refreshments. A family and a cultural event, the annual reception has continued to grow over the years and includes displays honoring service men and women of various decades as well as those who have been lost during service to their country.
A progress update will be presented on the planned Cherokee Nation Veterans Service Center in Tahlequah, with discussion and information about how the public can get involved. Information: 453-5695.
The Cherokee National Holiday, held annually over Labor Day weekend since 1953, commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Nation Constitution.
